About a disease

A dental implant is a surgical fixture that is placed into the jawbone and allowed to fuse with the bone over the span of a few months. The dental implant acts as a replacement for the root of a missing tooth. In turn, this “artificial tooth root” serves to hold a replacement tooth or bridge.

In the first phase, the surgical placement of the implant, your mouth will be thoroughly numbed with local anesthesia or you’ll be given IV sedation so you don’t feel any pain or discomfort.4

An incision is made in your gums to place the tooth root implant into the jawbone in the location of your missing tooth. Once the implant is placed, the dentist closes the gums over the implant so that it remains covered.8

You’ll recover at home and will probably come back for the second phase of the procedure in a few months. That gives enough time for the bone to grow around the implant, making it strong enough to stay in place. This process is called osseointegration, meaning the titanium combines with the bone.
